About Biomin GmbH

Biomin was founded in 1983, when Erich and Margarete Erber start offering feed additives and premixes for animal nutrition. Soon the company bought the premix factory Intermix, which led to the launch of the first production facility and the sale of a product, that deactivates mycotoxines. Today Biomin supplies customers in more than 100 countries and produces feed additives and premixes for livestock animals including swine, poultry, dairy and beef cattle as well as aquaculture.

Main Activity Area: Biomin has eight product lines including acidifiers, phytogenics, probiotics, silage preservation and mycotoxin-detoxifying agents. These products should ensure animal health, feed and water hygiene as well as support digestion and feed efficiency. Biomin is considered a market-leading pioneer in mycotoxin risk management solutions.
Research Area: Application-oriented basic research is conducted by the R&D team at the BIOMIN Research Center (BRC) at Campus Tulln in Austria. Researchers develop new methods, frequently down to the molecular level, as tools for inventing new solutions for the animal feed industry.
Microbiology, molecular biology, cell biology, analytics, fermentation, bioactive ingredient formulation and quality control are the areas of interest.
Achievements: The company’s most outstanding invention is its Mycofix product line for the deactivation of mycotoxins found in contaminated feed. It is the first and only feed additive company to obtain EU authorization for substances with proven mycotoxin counteracting properties. Mycotxins are toxins produced by mold and are found in 50% of animal feed worldwide. Thus the deactivation of these toxins could save billions in farming. Moreover the development of natural additives based on probiotic bacteria, yeast components and plant extracts in order to replace antibiotics in animal nutrition is done at R&D. An additional area of research is the stabilization of animal feed ingredients by using novel silage starter cultures and organic acids.
Staff Qualifications: Biomin employe 100 researchers that have obtained a university degree in biotechnology, microbiology, molecular biology, cell biology, animal nutrition, veterinary medicine, process engineering or a related field. The company collaborates with more than 120 universities and research institutes worldwide. Moreover PhD or master theses can be conducted within the company’s research studies.
