Nanotechnology
From the clothes and sunglasses you wear to computer hard drives and even cleaning products: nanotechnology - often inspired by nature - plays a major part in the manufacturing of many familiar products. Nanotechnology is an inescapable part of modern everyday life, both on holiday, at work and at home. There are things we've been using for many years which contain nano-sized components, such as the lasers in DVD and CD players. Yet most of the time this technology goes unnoticed. On the whole, people are not very aware of the scope of nanotechnology components around them. However, in the next 20 years, nanotechnology will touch the life of nearly every person on the planet. The potential benefits are mind boggling and potentially brain enhancing. But such as many of the great advancements in human history of innovations, it is not without risk.
Technology: Nanotechnology and nanomaterials are very different from other technologies and materials. Find out why they are so different and why there has been so much focus on them in recent years.
Social Issue: Nanomaterials could help us to have better lives. They offer a very promising potential in many fields including the food industry.
Health Issue: A huge benefit of nanomaterials is expected for medical innovations. Nanomaterials can have an undesirable effect on people's health. This area has not yet been sufficiently explored and we do not know if the positives outweigh the negatives or vice versa.
